VCU Fashion 2014 – IMPACT!

Sunday night Julia and I had the pleasure of watching the VCU Fashion Department showcase the designs of their many talented students.  A packed house at the VMFA watched over 190 looks come down the runway and there was no shortage of applause.  We saw spectacular, sheer gowns, nude embellished catsuits, day dresses and a pair of embroidered jodhpurs that were to die for (see detail below) and more of the  amazing menswear line previewed earlier here  by senior Margaret Arlow who showed her well crafted denim and leather separates. Sheer was the word of the night and we loved the daring of some of the looks. There was no shortage of color either as you will see in my snaps below.

We were thrilled to see so many Modelogic models on the runway do thing their thing and had a fantastic time in general.  Thanks again goes to the wonderful Deidra Arrington,  Donna Reamy, and Kim Guthrie from the fashion department for always including us in this great night ( and the great seats 🙂 )

Congratulations to all the students and faculty on a job well done!

CATALYST – 2013 VCU FASHION SHOW

L1050070I had the pleasure of attending the 2013 VCU fashion show tonight. Named Catalyst, defined as,  “an agent that provokes or speeds significant change or action”  the show included student designs for day dresses, menswear, swimwear and more.

One talented designer, Sarah Brown, wowed with her collection ,  “Pregknit” of  maternity clothes.  Easy silhouettes in deep plums and mauves, with fantastic knit shrugs would be a welcome addition to any womans wardrobe, pregnant or not!

Another standout was designer Grace Hazelgrove. Her collection, inspired by her time spent in Guinea, West Africa included bold colors and patterns and the entire collection was beautifully constructed.  All the garments were not only beautiful to look at , but beautifully tailored and sewn.

Jennifer Gray, the Critics Choice Winner sent some gorgeous clothes down the runway. Inspired by the celebration of life and the female form,  her graphic corset bustier and  formfitting color block dress with cutout detailing were favs.

Take a look at some of the fabulous clothes, included a video of the finale for your viewing pleasure.

A big thank you to the VCU fashion department for the invitation to the show and for always sending us the best interns  over the years. What a wonderful, talented group of people!

VCU Fashion Goes RAW

Last night was standing room only at  the VCU Fashion Department’s annual juried show.  Held at the VMFA in the gorgeous Cochrane Atrium, the show, titled RAW, was filled with beautifully crafted pieces that were artful, striking, and inspiring.  The design students created clothes for different segments, such as  hip-hop, day dresses, cocktail, resort and more.  The models, many of them from MW and many VCU students, were all spectacular on the runway.  Innovation and creativity ruled the evening, with  students using sustainable fabrics and showing off superb tailoring. VCU Fashion pulled off a wonderful show with New York quality production design and great music.  Congratulations to all the design students who showed, the fashion merchandising students who pulled it together and the Faculty of VCU Fashion on their  huge success.

Take a peek  at some snapshots I grabbed, from backstage to finale!  Enjoy!

VCU Fashion Gearing Up For Raw

Tonight I had the pleasure of attending the VCU Fashion Media Night to hear all about the upcoming annual juried fashion show, this year entitled RAW.

Interim Chair Donna Reamy, accompanied by professor Deidra Arrington , introduced us to 3 of the designers we will be seeing on the runway.

Brittany James showed us an amazing menswear look from the Hip Hop segment that included some very hot corduroy jodhpurs.  Krystal Vaquerano a junior at VCU this year, showed us a sweet dressy day  dress she is hoping will be placed in the show after the pieces are juried. And  Jasmine Harrison talked about her harness back cocktail dress, and her fondness for studs (See photo, totally hot)

Take a look at the illustrations some students did this semester (below).  VCU was honored to have members of Diane Von Furstenberg’s team meet with the illustration students for a day long critique of their patterns and sketches. I alway considered fashion sketches high art and these students are doing some amazing work in that arena of fashion design.

Something else I learned is that a great MW client , Charles Luck, who we posted about here, partnered with VCU for the evening wear segment of the show, sponsoring the fabric.  I love that Luckstone, a wonderful  Richmond company, is giving back.

The VCU Annual Juried Fashion Show takes place  Sunday, May 6, at 7:30 p.m. at the Louise B. and J. Harwood Cochrane Atrium at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.  This show is straight up the best night of fashion in Richmond every year, and it always sells out, so don’t miss out. Tickets go on sale April 2nd .  More info  here.

See you May 6th!

VCU Fashion Student Jasmine Harrison adds some personal flair to her cocktail look. (and i want her jacket)

Junior Krystal Vaquerano talks about her design process.

I would totally hang these in my house. Love.

VCU professor Deidra Arrington with students Taylor Wilhelm, Courtney Elliot and  MW intern Zach Stephens!

Brittany James with her menswear look.  Love those trousers.
